VIRGINIA NOW CONDEMNS DELEGATE BOB MARSHALL’s
ANTI-CHOICE LEGISLATION

Richmond, VA. – The Virginia NOW Executive Board announced, that it condemns the actions of anti-choice legislator Delegate Bob Marshall of Manassas in introducing harmful, divisive legislation. Marshall’s bill HB 2124 would outlaw abortion rights for the women of Virginia should the Supreme Court of the United States overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision. The sole exception allowed by Marshall’s bill would be if a woman were in danger of dying.

Delegate Marshall’s proposed law is nothing but a nuisance to the Virginia people and the General Assembly.  The purpose of this extremist bill is to divide the Assembly in a year when lawmakers of both political parties are attempting to work together for a better Virginia.

The 2006 midterm election showed that people in Virginia and nationwide are tired of divisive politics and want a change. Delegate Marshall is presenting nothing but the same old line.

“He isn’t listening to what Virginians have been saying,” said Marj Signer, president of Virginia NOW, the women’s organization with members in chapters throughout the state. In Virginia, responsible groups and individuals are working to prevent and reduce unintended pregnancy, which is a dignified and positive approach to a public health problem. These groups and individuals also are focused on prevention of cervical cancer through availability of the new HPV vaccine, which is supported by both the Republican and Democratic leadership. Divisive and wedge issues such as the one Delegate Bob Marshall offers will not be tolerated by the voters of this state.
